22) Adding polaroid effect in Gimp

Adding polaroid effect in Gimp

we can create a new image by applying effect on existing image in gimp. Lets us understand how we can do this by different effects. We have given below few guidelines, you are free to experiment with different values so that you will get different images.

This handout explains how to convert normal image in to a polaroid. Polaroid refers to photos taken  by age old polaroid cameras. We can easily convert any image into a polaroid type image.Lets see how to do it.
1. Open the photo in GIMP and add an Alpha Channel (JPEG files don't have an alpha channel, so change it to a format that does). You will be working with transparency (Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel).
[Note: Choose the image of equal length and breadth for better results.]

2. Now enlarge the image canvas to make rooom for the Polaroid border.
Go to Image > Canvas Size and adjust the values of height and width. Move the image to apropriate position as seen the screenshot.Move (drag & drop) the active photo somewhere in the middle of the enlarged canvas.

3. Go to Layer >  New Layer to add a new layer and move it (drag & drop) under the photo layer, it will be used to hold the paper border. Drag and move the image layer above the new layer as seen in screenshot below.

4. Use the Rectangle Select Tool to make a rectangular selection in the new layer around the photo, it will be the border. For a realistic Polaroid, make the bottom border thicker.
Fill the selected rectangle with white, as it is paper, or with a very light grey, to get a bit of contrast, as if the photo is over a white background. The result is like this, it starts to resemble a photo.

5. For increased realism, add a small drop shadow
(Filters > Light and Shadow > Drop Shadow).
Adjust the offset and blur radius values according to your needs. Uncheck allow resizing check box. Now the photo will have a slight 3D look.

6. Use the text tool, select a nice hand font (we want a realistic effect, remember) and write something about the photo.
[Note : Select the top most image layer in the layer menu before inserting text tool]

7. Now bend the photo a little.
So use the Curve Bend filter (Filters > Distorts > Curve Bend), make sure Smoothing and Antialiasing are checked, check Live Preview too if you want, and play with the upper and lower Curve for Border.

8. Move the photo layer to fit the shadow and then merge them together. You should have two layers at this time.

9. Use the Rotate Tool and rotate the photo layer a bit for even more realism.

10.  So now time to look and enjoy our beautiful polaroid photo
