Blurring the Background
Sometimes we need to emphasize on a particular object in an image. In real life, when we click a photograph, we often focus on a particular object and rest of the area is out of focus (It looks blurred). Similarly, in GIMP, we can focus on an object by blurring the rest of the image.
Here we will learn how to blur the background of an image.
1. Open an image file.

We will focus on the statue in this image and will blur the background.
2. We will use the Quick Mask tool for selection here, out of many other options for selection tools.
Click the small outlined button at the lower left of the image
window to toggle QuickMask on and off
In QuickMask mode, the selection is shown as a translucent screen overlying the image, whose transparency at each pixel indicates the degree to which that pixel is selected. By default, the mask is shown in red, but you can change this if another mask color is more convenient. The less a pixel is selected, the more it is obscured by the mask. Fully selected pixels are shown completely clear.
Select the brush tool.
3. We can select the area to be blurred in 2 ways: -
a) By painting the focused object and inverting the selection
b) By painting the area to be blurred
We will use option a).
The foreground color should be white for painting the selection. (Highlighted area on the center left)
4. We have painted the entire area to be focused upon
5. Switch off the Quick Mask mode to make the selection.
6. Go to ‘Select’ option from Menu bar. Click on ‘Invert’ to invert the selection.
7. Go to Filter Option from the Menu bar. Choose Blur, then Gaussian Blur.
8. A window showing the Gaussian Blur controls, will appear
9. Change the horizontal and vertical values in the window to get the required blur.
10. Here is the final image.
