12) Pie chart

Pie chart

A pie chart shows values as sectors of the total circle. It shows sectors as coloured areas of the total pie to represent each value. In the created chart, you can click and drag any sector to separate that sector from the remaining pie or to join it back.
It is a special graph which shows the relative size of the data by the pie slices. Pie charts are excellent when you need to compare proportions. They work best with smaller numbers of values, about half a dozen; more than this and the visual impact begins to fade.

For example:
Consider the data on expenditures on various items for the total income. Each expense is represented in percentage out of the total income, which helps in understanding the data in relation to the whole.

Plotting pie chart
  1. Select the data given in the spreadsheet
  2. Open the chart wizard (Recall the steps given in the previous handouts)
  3. Select the chart type ‘Pie’ and click finish

  1. Pie chart gets displayed in the spreadsheet

It can also be visualised as 3D output by checking 3D options. And the output will be as follows
