13) Saving Files

Saving Files

Image editing is just like any other type of document editing: once you’ve made any significant change to a file, you should save it. It’s always better to save your work frequently, in case of a computer
crash or other disaster.
GIMP saves any file in XCF format by default. It is an editable file format where you can make changes in the file even after you have closed it after saving.

Suppose you want to write some text on an image and then save it for further editing possibilities:

1. Choose the Text Tool (highlighted) from the tool box

2. Create a new layer for text by clicking on the ‘new layer’ icon at the bottom right

3. Clicking ‘Ok’ in the above dialog box will create a new layer

4. Now write the desired text

5. For Saving this file now, go to File → Save as

6. It will open a dialog box where you can write the name of the file and then save it

This file will automatically be saved in XCF format unless you have made any changes to the menu.

7. Now if you want edit the text in the file, open the file and it will appear same as you last saved it. You can thus make he desired changes

8. Now this file can also be exported in various other image file formats like PNG, TIFF, JPEG etc. Here we will export it in JPEG.
Go to File → Export

9. Choose JPEG from the drop down menu in the dialog box

This image can now be used anywhere as it has been saved in a universally acceptable file format
