Customising a chart
After you have created a chart, you may find things you would like to change. Spreadsheet provides tools for changing the chart type, chart elements, data ranges, fonts, colors, and many other options, through the Insert and Format menus, the right-click (context) menu, and the Chart toolbar. Chart elements are shown below:

some of this elements can be added while creating itself. They can also be modified after creation.
Adding chart elements
Initially when you create a chart, it doesn’t display title, subtitle or axis names. But these are very essential to communicate to the viewer information like what the graph is about, which value is marked along each axis etc. Hence it is advisable to enter these details while creating the graph.
So let us redefine the steps for creating a graph:
1. Select the data in the spreadsheet

2. Open chart wizard
3. Select the type of graph
4. Before clicking on finish, select the option chart elements under steps. Various options of chart elements are displayed.

5. Enter the relevant details you want to display
Enter a title and subtitle you want to use in the Title and Subtitle text boxes. For example, a better title for this example chart might be Marks Obtained by Students and subtitle might be Quarterly Examination - 2015
Enter a name you want to use in the X axis and Y axis text boxes, for example, Marks for the Y axis. The Z axis text box is only active if you are creating a 3D chart.
Select the Display legend checkbox if you want to display the legend and also select where you want the legend to be displayed on your chart – Left, Right, Top Or Bottom. Legend is required only only when there are more than one colour coding or if axis is not marked with any name.
In Display grids , select the X axis or Y axis checkboxes to display a grid on your chart. The Z axis checkbox is only active if you are creating a 3D chart. Grid lines are not available for pie charts
6. Then click finish. This displays the chart as follows

Chart title
To edit a chart title that you have inserted into a LibreOffice document:
1. Double-click on the chart. A gray border appears around the chart and the menu bar now contains commands for editing the objects in the chart.

2. A single-click on the title allows you to move it with the mouse.
3. Double-click on an existing title text. A gray border appears around the text and you can now make changes. Press Enter to create a new title.
4. If no title text exists, right click your mouse and choose Insert Titles or select Insert →Titles from the menu bar. Then enter the text in a dialog box that appears..

5. If you want to change the formatting of the main title, right click mouse and choose format title or select Format →Title →Main Title from the menu bar. This opens the Title dialog.

6. Select one of the available tabs (border, area, transparency, font, font effects, alignment) in the dialog and make required modifications border - style, colour, width, transparency; Area- Fill color; transparency, font - type, colour, style, size, effects, alignment etc.

7. Click OK. In your document, click outside the chart to exit chart editing mode. You can observe the changes made in the chart.

Chart legend
To edit a chart legend:
1. Enter edit mode by double-clicking on the chart.
2. A single-click on the legend allows you to move it with the mouse.
3. Open the legend dialogue following any one of the method:
Double click on the legend
Right click on the mouse and select format legend

Select Format →Legend from menu bar
This opens the Legend dialog.

1. Choose from the available tabs and make required modifications (For example, colour, style , position etc)
2. Click OK. In your document, click outside the chart to exit chart editing mode. You can observe the changes made in the chart.


Axes of a chart
To edit the axes of a chart that you have inserted:
1. Enter edit mode by double-clicking on the chart.
2. Open the legend dialogue following any one of the method:
a. Double click on the axes you want to edit
b. Right click on the mouse and select format axis
c. Select Format →Axis from menu bar
3. This opens the Axis dialog.

4. Select from the available sections and make the required changes (for example, select the Scale tabif you want to modify the scale of the axis).

5. Click OK. In your document, click outside the chart to exit chart editing mode. You can observe the changes made in the chart.

Chart area
To edit the area of a chart :
1. Enter edit mode by double clicking on the chart.
2. Open the chart area dialogue box by following any one of the method:
Double click on the chart area
Right click on the mouse and select format chart area
Select Format →Chart Area from menu bar
3. This opens the chart area dialogue
4. Select from the available sections and make the required changes (for example, select the colour, border, transparency).
5. Click OK. In your document, click outside the chart to exit chart editing mode. You can observe the changes made in the chart.
Example:

Bar in the chart
You can change colour or add texture to the bars in a graph or chart (instead of the default colors) via bitmap graphics:
1. Enter edit mode by double-clicking on the chart.
2. Click on any bar of the bar series and all bars of this series are now selected (A green box inside all the bars in the below image shows that all the bars are selected).

If you want to edit only one bar, click again on that bar (A green box around a single bar in the below image shows that the particular bar is selected).

3. Open the chart area dialogue following any one of the method:
Double click on the bars
Right click on the mouse and select Format Data Series
Select Format →Format Selection from menu bar
4. This opens the chart area dialogue

5. Select from the available sections and make the required changes (For example, To add texture to the bar, choose the Area tab and click on Bitmap. In the list box select a bitmap as a texture for the currently selected bars.)

6. Click OK to accept the setting.
Example:
Chart wall, grid, chart floor
Similarly you can also edit chart wall, grid etc following the same steps and selecting the appropriate options. Chart floor editing is possible only in 3D charts. To edit grid, first insert the grid by selecting the axis and then format the grid.

Data ranges
Data Range, you can manually correct any mistakes you have made in selecting the data. On this page you can also change the way you are plotting the data by using the rows—rather than the columns—as data series. This is useful if you use a style of chart such as Donut or Pie to display your data. Lastly, you can choose whether to use the first row or first column, or both, as labels on the axes of the chart. You can confirm what you have done so far by clicking the Finish button, or click Next to change some more details of the chart. This can be done in the data range dialogue that can be opened following any of these steps being in edit mode:
Right click on the mouse and select Data Ranges
Select Format →Data Ranges from menu bar
Chart Type
Type of chart that is displayed and whether it is 2D or 3D chart can also be changed after creation
only that column, bar, pie and area charts can also be displayed as a 3D chart. This can be done in the data range dialogue that can be opened following any of these steps in edit mode:
Right click on the mouse and select Chart Type
Select Format →Chart Type from menu bar
Data labels
Data labels are the values that each bar represents. To make the chart very clear in communicating the exact values each bar represents, you can include data labels. This can be inserted by selecting the bars and then following any one of this:
Right click mouse and select Insert Date Labels.
Select Insert →Data Labels from menu bar
This inserts the data label in the chart.

Various clicks you need to remember while editing charts:
1. Click a chart to edit the object properties:
Size and position on the current page.
Alignment, text wrap, outer borders, and more.
2. Double click a chart to enter the chart edit mode:
Chart data values (for charts with own data).
Chart type, axes, titles, walls, grid, and more.
3. Double click a chart element in chart edit mode:
Double click an axis to edit the scale, type, color, and more.
Double click a data point to select and edit the data series to which the data point belongs.
With a data series selected, click, then double click a single data point to edit the properties of this data point (for example, a single bar in a bar chart).
Double click the legend to select and edit the legend. Click, then double-click a symbol in the selected legend to edit the associated data series.
Double click any other chart element, or click the element and open the Format menu, to edit the properties.
4. Click outside the chart to leave the current edit mode.

5. If you want to change the formatting of the main title, right click mouse and choose format title or select Format →Title →Main Title from the menu bar. This opens the Title dialog.

Right click on the mouse and select format chart area
Select Format →Chart Area from menu bar

4. Select from the available sections and make the required changes (for example, select the colour, border, transparency).
5. Click OK. In your document, click outside the chart to exit chart editing mode. You can observe the changes made in the chart.

Bar in the chart
You can change colour or add texture to the bars in a graph or chart (instead of the default colors) via bitmap graphics:
1. Enter edit mode by double-clicking on the chart.
2. Click on any bar of the bar series and all bars of this series are now selected (A green box inside all the bars in the below image shows that all the bars are selected).
If you want to edit only one bar, click again on that bar (A green box around a single bar in the below image shows that the particular bar is selected).
