18) Modifying text attributes and text layout

Modifying text attributes and text layout

The text attributes like size, type, style, colour and text layout like direction, alignment, face etc can be changed using the text formatting bar or the formatting dialogue.
Font type
To change the font type, select the text, click on the font type drop down list in the tool bar and choose the type of the font.

For example, the text in ‘san’ is changed to ‘serif’

Font size
To change the font size, click on the font size drop down list in the tool bar and select the number which determines the size of the font.

For example,
Font size is changed from 64 to 40

Font style
Similarly font style can be chosen by clicking the icons shown below to make it bold or italic

Font colour
Select the text and select the colour from the colour palette seen at the bottom.

For example, font colour of the words in the below image are changed

Alignment
Select the text and choose any of the option that appears at in the text tool (market within red box in image below)

Rotate and flip
Select the text and choose rotate or flip icon that appears at in the text tool (market within red box in image below).

Each click on the rotation tool makes a rotation of 90 degree. Rotation can be done in clockwise as well as anti clockwise direction based on the icon you select.
For example,
Flipping can be done horizontally and vertically

Text on Path
Text can be written along the described path. This helps in modifying the face of the text. To do follow the steps below:
1. Add the add text to the canvas

2. Decide on the path in which you want to put the text and draw the path in the canvas. The path can be pre designed object or can also be drawn by yourself.
For example, spiral tool can be choosed and a spiral can be drawn which is a predesigned object.

Otherwise, by choosing the pencil tool you draw the path as you wish

Note: The direction in which you draw decides the direction of the text. Here the line is drawn from left to right.
3.  Once the path is described, select the text and the path.

4. Now select from menu bar Text →Put on Path

5. The output will be shown as below

Sometimes, due the mismatch between the length of the path and length of the text, the whole text may not not appear as in above image. In such cases, the arrow mark should be pulled and length of the path should be adjusted.

Then the text gets fitted in the path.

6. The path can be defined in the way you wish. Few more example of text put on pathare as follows:

Spacing, Kerning and shifting text
The spacing between letters, words, direction of the text and positioning of the letters etc can also be changed using the icons found in the tool bar when text tool is selected. The effect can be applied by increasing or decreasing the values in the respective bar

Let us see the effect of the above options on the below text

Spacing between lines:
This helps in increasing and decreasing the space between the lines uniformly. Negative values reduces whereas positive increasing the space.

Spacing between letters:
This helps in increasing and decreasing the space between the letters uniformly. Negative values reduces whereas positive increases the space.

Spacing between words:
This helps in increasing and decreasing the space between the words uniformly. Negative values reduces whereas positive increases the space.

Horizontal kerning:
This helps in increasing or reducing the space between any two words or letters. Negative values reduces whereas positive increases the space. This helps in customizing the space variantly according to the need whereas spacing done between will do it uniformly.

Vertical lift:
This moves the words after the arrow point towards up and down. Negative values lifts the character up whereas positive moves it down from its original position.

Character rotation:
The negative values rotation the character in anticlockwise whereas positive values in clockwise direction

Direction
Text can be arranged in two ways by definition horizontal or vertical
Horizontal text:
By default the horizontal text is selected and hence the text you type afters from left to write.

Vertical text:
The text can be changed to vertical appearance by selecting this icon.
