we can create a new image by applying effect on existing image in gimp. Lets us understand how we can do this by different effects. We have given below few guidelines, you are free to experiment with different values so that you will get different images.

In this handout we will explain how to reduce colors in image by using posterize tool in gimp which converts an image in to a poster like image. Posterize tool will intelligently reduce the number of colors in active layer or active selection.

1. Open the image in a gimp.
2. Go to posterize tool, You can do this by two ways
   Color→ posterize tool or Tools→ color tools→ posterize tool.
   
3. Here, You can adjust posterize levels from 2 to 256 according to your needs.
   You can click on preview to see the output file.
   Click on ok to finish and close the posterize tool.
