Downloading Content (audio/video/text) from Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia allows you to download the text by keyword search. You can filter the contents by choosing subcategories to get exact content that you want based on your requirement.

For instance, if you want to download science symbols of Bohr models, open the browser and type https://commons.wikimedia.org

    In the search box, type science and click search icon.

         From the category: Science page, click Science symbols

From the Category: Science symbols page, Choose Chemical symbols from the Subcategories

From Category: Chemical symbols page, click Bohr model icons.

If one would like to use popular culture atom symbol.svg, click on that icon.

The image is displayed. Click Download icon and click Download original file.

Choose save file, click ok and the image will be saved in the downloads folder of your computer.

Downloading Audio/Video Contents :

There are several online repositories from where the multimedia content like images, audios and videos can be downloaded.  We will use Wikimedia commons to download the audio and video files using filtering.

Downloading Audio :

For instance to download our National Anthem audio file follow the given steps:

Step 1: Open the browser and type https://commons.wikimedia.org

Step 2: To download Audio file, Click on Sounds

Step 3: Select Category Audio Files

Step 4: Choose Audio files by country

Step 5: Choose Audio files of India

Step 6: Choose Jana Gana Mana

7. Step 7: Choose Jana Gana Mana Vocal .ogg

OGG is a free, open container format created for users to stream and alters high quality digital multimedia files for free.

Step 8:  Click on Menu

Step 9: Click on the Download icon .

Step 10: Select English(en) Subtitles option.  

Step 11:  Click on Save File  and find the file in downloads folder.

Downloading Videos :

To save the links of the videos available on Wikimedia commons :

When looking for videos for Videos on river transport for example follow the given steps :

Step 1: Go to the Wikimedia Commons page https://commons.wikimedia.org

Step2: Choose Videos and in the search box type Videos on river transport.

The page will open as shown below; Right click on the URL of the file and choose ‘Save Link As

Save  the file in your local computer. The link will be saved and one can play the same video with this link later on.

Steps to follow to downloading Video files:

1. Open the browser and type https://commons.wikimedia.org

2. Select the Videos option

Step 3: Select Videos by subject option

Step 4: Select Videos of nature option

Step 5: Choose Videos on Sunrises and choose the desired video

Step 6 : Play the video and right click on it and choose Save video as

Step 7: The Video will be downloaded in the local computer in the downloads folder.
