Image File Formats
Image file formats are standardised means of organising and storing digital images. They are composed of digital data in one of these formats that can be rasterized for use on a computer or printer. An image file format may store data in uncompressed, compressed or in vector formats.
Different Image file formats are:
- JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
- PNG (Portable Network Graphics)
- GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)
- RAW refers to raw image formats
Recognising file format of an image:
- To look for the format of an image file, select the file and right-click on it. Click on 'Properties' from the list of options that appear.
The following window will open. Details of the file appear in this window along with its format or file 'Type'.
Note - The file format of the image also appears in the name of the file. Here, the name of the file is followed by its format. Example, Cups2.png (.png represents the file format).
