Website, Webpage And Web Address

Webpage

A document commonly created using HTML and displayed on a web browser is called as a Web page. The web pages are generally independent of web browsers.





A web page is a single page of information of a website. A web page can be Static or Dynamic. Static pages show the same content each time they are viewed.  Dynamic web page is a web page that displays different content each time it's viewed. For example, the page may change with the time of day, the user that accesses the webpage, or the type of user interaction.

Web pages usually have hyperlinks that lead to other web pages. It is nonlinear in nature, that is, users can navigate between web pages. Content on a web page can be textual, non-textual or interactive elements. Non textual elements are like images, audio and videos that can be embedded in web pages. Interactive elements like chat , through which people can connect with one another, search box, dialogue box etc.

Website
A collection of webpages which are grouped together or usually connected together in various ways are often called a "web site" or simply a "site". Website can be free/ paid/ registered.



There are various type of websites:

  • Information (Newspapers, TV Channels, Web Dunia, Maps, Weather, Search engines) Community (eg, Teachers' Association website)
  • Resource repositories (e.g. NCERT)
  • Video downloads (youtube, teacher tube, geogebratube)
  • Public services websites (IRCTC)
  • Banking and e-commerce websites (Internet banking, visit to Rashtraprati Bhawan)
  • Collaborative websites (Discussion forums, Hardware software forums, Wikipedia)
  • Vendor websites (product based-khadi , service based-)
  • Massively Open Online Courses
  • Social networking websites (eg. Facebook)
  • Internet radio
  • Email groups
  • Personal/ Institutional websites etc

Web address:

Web address refers to the address of a webpage. Each page has its own unique web address (URL). URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. The computer locates the web page that you are trying to find only by using this URL.

Usually, URL consists of four parts:
  • protocol
  • server (or domain)
  • path and
  • file name

Here are few examples of Web Address and its components:

Example 1
http://www.ncert.nic.in/departments/nie.html
http - is the protocol.
www.ncert.nic.in - is the server or  domain.
departments is the path.
nie.html is the filename of the page.

Example 2:
http://www.ebooks.com/subjects/default.htm is the web address.
http is the protocol.
www.ebooks.com is the server or domain.
subjects is the path.
default.htm is the filename of the page.

Example 3:
Sometimes there is no path or filename in the URL, especially when it is a home page of the website. For example the web address in the below do not have path or file name as it is the home page.

In a Web Address, extensions are an important part of domain names. Extensions are intended to show the type of establishment that owns and publishes the domain.

Here is a list of common extensions:
.edu - Educational organization
.ac - Academic institution (outside of US)
.com - Company (usually .co in the UK)
.org - Any organization
.go - Government agency
.net – Network
.mil - Military institution

.af - Afghanistan

.bd - Bangladesh
.lk - Sri Lanka
.my - Asia Malaysia
.pk - Asia Pakistan
.ac - Ascension Island

Opening Website:

Let us take an example of opening “E-pathshala

Open Web Browser (like Google Chrome, Mozilla, Internet Explorer) and type epathshala.nic.in on address bar and press enter.




You will see a web page as given below. If it didn't not then check your internet connection or check if the url is typed correctly in the address bar.
